Department of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering (AMSE)

Department of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering of Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) started as the Department of Metallurgical Engineering in 1967 and was merged with the Department of Materials Engineering in 1996. Later in 2005, it was renamed as the Department of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering (AMSE). By merging two departments, convergence of various material technologies has become possible. As a result, our department has been growing rapidly with outstanding research output by fostering many talented researchers.

Recently, our department was ranked 26th in the Materials Sciences (2020 QS World University Rankings), demonstrating the feasibility of our big dream of entering the top 20th in the world university ranking. Without complacency with the achievements we made so far, we strongly believe that the AMSE will lead the future technological development and innovation by taking a solid position in materials science and engineering by achieving internal reinforcement of education and research, promoting active international cooperation, and fostering promising students.

In 2020, AMSE established 'Global Elite Cultivation in HumanTech Materials' as the educational vision to preemptively cope with the future technology demands. Instead of the typical top-down approaches for teaching and learning, we aim to develop and operate the student success-based human resource programs. Faculty, department, and the university will cooperate to provide full emotional & financial support for the students as mentors.
